Garnets in Nijar

Just north-east of Nijar on the west side of the A7 motorway, you can see several craters of extinct volcanoes. In one of these, you will find an easy source of fun for children and adults alike - an activity that we like to call "garnet-hunting". Small garnets have been washed down by the rains and can be easily spotted on the foot-trails leading into the centre of the volcano.

How to get there

1.  Drive down the A7 motorway towards Almeria until you come to the exit for Nijar. Straight after the exit, at the beginning of the road to Nijar there is a break in the wire fencing on the right of the road and several dirt tracks lead away from the main road in various directions
2. There is one track that heads backwards, parallel with the road. The next one heads towards a breach in the volcano crater - take this one)
3. Drive along this track until you get to another track that runs alongside the volcano crater. Turn right along this track, until you come to a white hut with a domed roof.
4. It is already possible to spot small garnets directly where you park the car, but if you follow the valley, you will find many more...
